Nigeria, the most populated country in Africa with an estimated population of
225,952,720 as at 1st July, 2023 (Based on the projections of United Nations data) has long
grappled with excessive problems in the political sector that has hindered the Nations growth,
stability, progress and operative governance.
Since its independence in 1960 certain challenges has afflicted the nation hindering the nation from positive growth, these challenges tend to include; Religious and ethnic tensions, electoral irregularities, insurgency and corruption.
Religious and Ethnic Tensions
Ethnic and religious tensions have consistently posed challenges to the stability of this
nation, as a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation with over 250 ethnic groups historical
grievances and competition for political power have propelled violent clashes between different
groups.
Extremist groups have capitalized on these divisions leading to attacks that have claimed
the lives of many citizens.
Electoral Irregularities
Nigeria have electoral irregularities have become siblings such that citizens cannot trust
their leaders to deliver a free and fair election, which is becoming a reason for political apathy in
the country.
Irregularities like voter intimidation, ballot snatching, BVAS manipulation,
manipulation of election results etc., tend to undermine the legitimacy of elected officials and
undermines the growth of democratic values in the nation which in turn results in political
instability.
Insurgency
Nigeria is struggling with various violent insurgencies with groups like Boko Haram and
IPOB being the most talked about in recent times.
Fueled by government neglect, socio-economic grievances and corruption, these groups contribute to insecurity discouraging
investment and hindrance of economic growth.
Corruption
Lack of accountability and transparency has hindered the development of this nation,
corruption has been deeply established in our nation such that it affects every aspect of our
society. Bribery and corruption is slowly becoming the order of the day in our country today.
Political leaders embezzle public funds for their personal use prioritizing personal interest over
that of the citizens of this great nation.
The damage caused by corruption is massive and the fact our leaders don’t care is baffling, corruption has resulted in a lack of investment in critical infrastructure, limited access to health care and education, inadequate provisions of basic services, slow judicial process, widening income inequality and limited rule of law.
If we as a nation are to overcome these challenges we must address corruption, promote
inclusivity, ensure free and fair elections, respect diversity, promote equitable development among all regions, make efforts to foster unity and learn to hold our leaders accountable.
The journey towards political stability requires collective action from both the citizens and the
government which aligns with saying “teamwork makes the dream work”.
