Nigeria’s youth, a dynamic and vivacious group, are leading the way in the country’s change. However, a sense of political indifference penetrates this younger generation, raising concerns about the future of democracy in Nigeria.
This apathy has its roots in the disappointment caused by a protracted history of rigged elections, which has left voters with the impression that their voices are routinely muffled and
their ballots are worthless.
Nigerian youths played a pivotal role in the country’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule.
Their unwavering determination, intellectual prowess, and organizational skills were instrumental
in galvanizing the populace and pushing the colonial authorities towards self-governance.
Among these notable young heroes were
Nnamdi Azikiwe (1904-1996)
Obafemi Awolowo (1909-1987)
Ahmadu Bello (1910-1966)
These young heroes, along with countless others, formed the backbone of the independence
movement, tirelessly working towards the day when Nigeria would be free from colonial rule.
Their sacrifices and unwavering commitment to self-determination paved the way for Nigeria’s independence in 1960.
Widespread electoral tampering destroyed the nations expectations for a democratic transition in the 1993 General Elections.
The election, which was deemed to have been won by Moshood Abiola, was annulled, and this deeply damaged the mentality of the Nigerian young.
This evident treachery shattered their faith in the electoral process and sowed the mistrust seeds that are still sprouting today.
The military’s interventions in Nigerian politics have had a profound impact on the country’s development.
They have led to widespread human rights abuses, corruption, and a decline in economic
growth. The military’s grip on power has also stifled political participation and stifled the growth of civil
society.
As a result of these factors, Nigeria remains a fragile democracy today.
Even though the 2019 General Elections saw changes to the electoral process, the youths confidence was not entirely restored.
Allegations of vote-buying and voter intimidation clouded the elections, despite the fact that there were fewer cases of overt manipulation.
These anomalies strengthened the belief that young peoples participation in politics was meaningless and that the system was biased against them.
With the recent conclusion of the 2023 General Elections, youngsters had a resurgence of hope and a
yearning to be heard due to the events that happened during the ENDSARS protests in October 2020.
However, the memories of the past still plague their involvement. Recent allegations of vote-buying and
election rigging have reportedly undermined their confidence in the during the election procedure.
The youth, as a result of this cycle of disappointment, widely believe that their votes are meaningless.
They believe that their views are just echoes in the enormous sea of Nigerian politics, and that the
political system is set up to benefit the established power brokers.
This belief has contributed to a rising feeling of indifference and disengagement from politics, which poses a threat to democracy itself.
A diversified strategy is needed to combat the youths political indifference. It requires a sincere
dedication to maintaining the free, fair, and transparent conduct of elections.
It requires a political culture that values inclusivity and gives young people the authority to actively engage in the processes that determine their future.
Nigerias youth are not just observers; 24 Year old Victor Osihmen Led Italian Football club “Napoli” to
their first League title in 33 years while breaking records and becoming an household name, 23 Year old
Divine Ikubor (Rema) performed at the 2023 Balon d’or ceremony and his hit single “Calm Down” just hit a billion streams.
It is quite evident that the youths are shaping the country’s destiny. Their efforts must
be acknowledged and their voices heard.
Not only is it politically advantageous to restore their faith in
the electoral process, but it is also an essential step in creating a Nigeria that is genuinely democratic.
