Reflecting on Onyeka Onwenu: An Inspiration for Young Nigerian Women

It’s been a long day for me as a young Nigerian female artist, social scientist, and concerned Nigerian citizen. Today, I reflect on the incredible influence of Onyeka Onwenu who passed away last night, after a brilliant performance, a woman whose artistry and activism have shaped my aspirations and worldview.

A Childhood Inspiration

At the tender age of 3 or 4, I was captivated by Onyeka Onwenu on AIT. Her style, composure, outspokenness, articulacy, confidence, dance, lyrics, and elegance left an indelible mark on my young mind. She was not just a singer but a beacon of inspiration, prompting me to dream of making music and appearing on TV in a dignified manner that would uplift people’s spirits.

More Than Just Music

Onyeka Onwenu’s legacy extends beyond her music. Her activism for a better Nigeria and her unwavering commitment to the concept of One Nigeria have been profound. Despite her celebrity status, she spoke passionately about governance and public affairs, using her platform to advocate for positive change. Her work as a broadcaster further showcased her articulate nature and dedication to the country’s progress.

Inspiring the Next Generation

For Mama Onyeka, it was never just about the music. She aimed to inspire the next generation of females to push themselves and show Nigerians what we are made of. Her ability to intertwine artistry with activism has made her a timeless figure in Nigerian culture. Family and friends often ask me how I manage to balance my music and activism, and I point to figures like Fela Kuti and Onyeka Onwenu, who created conscious music that transcended time.

A Call for Conscious Artistry

This morning, during my workout, I found myself contemplating the direction of my next body of work. I realized that it must embody a sense of consciousness around social and economic issues. Listening to more of Onyeka Onwenu’s work for inspiration, I was heartbroken to learn of her passing. Her song “One Love,” often played during breaks at the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG), heals and inspires us to be better Nigerians and serve our country.

A Lasting Legacy

It is often said that good people leave us too soon, while the bad ones linger longer. Onyeka Onwenu sang until her last moment, a testament to her belief that her talent was a gift meant to inspire others. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her impact will endure.

Gratitude and Farewell

Thank you, Mama Onyeka, for inspiring girls like me to strive for more. Thank you for your evergreen music that speaks the truth about the Biafra War, the scars it left on generations, and the need for integration and healing. You will be dearly missed, but your legacy will continue to inspire us all.
